This year’s challenge walk will provide spectacular scenery and views over the Galloway countryside and will show the true meaning of walking in the Galloway tussocks, with most of the walking taking place in the craggy granite core of the surrounding Ring of Fire route.
The walk will leave Bruce’s Stone and head along the Southern Upland Way heading towards the first trig point of the day on Craiglee (531m) we will then head to Snibe Hill, Craignaw and across the Dungeon Range taking in the Devil’s Bowling Green then head to the summit of Mullwharchar, one of the most remote hills in Dumfries & Galloway. Mullwharchar is a Donald which sits between Merrick and Corserine.
Walking around the north of Loch Enoch we will start the climb to our highest point of the day, The Merrick (843m).
Once over the summit we will start to descend towards Benyellary and finally return to Bruce’s Stone where the minibus will be a welcome sight.
Please note that this route is only for experienced walkers with very good fitness levels. 15 miles through Galloway terrain is much more challenging than 15 miles over Lakeland Fells with well-established paths for example.
