20 year challenges


This year is our 20th Newton Stewart Walking Festival. To celebate, we are offering two multi-day challenges. Our Ring of Fire challenge is a three day route of strenuous and very strenuous walks while our Southern Upland Way challenge is a 4 day route of moderate and moderate plus walks.

Ring of Fire 3 day challenge (strenuous and very strenuous walks)

The challenging Ring of Fire Route over three consecutive days (Friday 10 May to Sunday 12 May). This route takes in 30 peaks over all three main ranges in the Galloway Hills - the Minnigaff Hills, the Rhinns of Kells and the Awful Hand Range. You can sign up for 1, 2 or all 3 days, ensuring spectacular scenery and views over the Galloway countryside from all angles.

Southern Upland Way 4 day challenge (moderate and moderate plus walks)

The second multi-day challenge covers the westernmost 45 miles of the Southern Upland Way over 4 days (Friday 10 May to Monday 13 May). The 212 mile long distance route stretches from Portpartick on the west coast of Scotland to Cockburnspath on the east coast. It is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024, and the festival’s 4 day challenge will cover the section from Portpartrick to Glentrool. You can sign up for 1, 2, 3 or all 4 days.

You can sign up for all days of your chosen challenge, or you can pick and choose individual days which take your fancy.
